Rafael
Nadal has bid farewell to the
Madrid Open in what seems to be the last edition
in the career of the legendary Spanish tennis player, as he was eliminated in
the round of 16 against
Jiri Lehecka, and after the match, a beautiful tribute
was paid to him for his entire trajectory in the
ATP 1000.
In his
on-court remarks, Nadal explained what it meant for him to play one last time
at the Madrid Open: "It has been very special for me, very positive in
many ways. I had the opportunity to play once again on this court that has
given me so much at a sporting and emotional level. Just a few weeks ago, I
didn't know if I could compete again in an official match, and I was able to do
it."
Nadal won
the Madrid Open for the first time in 2005, and he remembered that thrilling
match in his statements: "The first time I came here was in 2003. In 2005,
I achieved one of the most exciting victories of my career. From then until
today, there has been unconditional support from everyone. Thank you, there is
no way to express my gratitude. All I can do is say thank you. It has been an
unforgettable journey."
"These
21 years have been a gift. The emotions I take from this court are something
that will stay with me forever. Even more so than some Grand Slam titles I have
won. I have been fortunate to turn what was once a hobby into my job. I feel
very lucky for everything I have experienced. I couldn't ask for anything more.
I hope I have been an example for future generations," added Nadal to
conclude the tribute ceremony.
