Rafael Nadal won't be playing at the Barcelona Open because an injury setback rules him out of that event leaving his clay season in serious doubt.
Nadal's primary target in his recovery was always Roland Garros.
All the events coming before it are not so important for the Spaniard even though he would have liked to play Barcelona and Madrid for obvious reasons. A hip injury at the Australian Open looked serious but nobody expects him to miss months with it but hip injuries can be career-ending as Murray well knows.
It seems that a setback happened which will push back his return even further. According to a Spanish Newspaper Nadal is likely to return in Madrid one week after the Barcelona Open where he generally played as well. That won't be happening this year though:
"There is a 90% chance that the Spaniard will not be in the Conde de Godó Tournament and will opt for a more prudent and long preparation to face his great goal of 2023 with greater guarantees: Roland Garros. His return to the courts will finally take place at the Mutua Madrid Open (April 26 to May 7).”
