Osaka withdraws from WTA Finals due to injury, Bertens in as replacement

Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the WTA Finals in Shenzhen due to a right shoulder injury despite already having a win on the board so far in the competition.

Osaka defeated Petra Kvitova in an excellent game on Sunday night; she was set to face off against Ashleigh Barty on Tuesday night.

Kiki Bertens, the next player in the rankings is now in as a replacement. The Australian Open champion spoke of how gutted she is to withdraw and that it isn't how she wanted to end her season.

“I’m disappointed to have to withdraw from the Finals,” Osaka said in a statement. “It has been a great event in Shenzhen, and it’s the biggest WTA event of the year. This is not how I wanted to end this tournament or my season. I look forward to getting healthy and hope to be back here in Shenzhen next year.”

Despite coming in late, Bertens still has a chance to make it through with the Dutchwoman hoping for Belinda Bencic winning to give her the opportunity to potentially win through tomorrow.
