Novak Djokovic nearly saw the tide turn during his win over Jacob Fearnley over to the Brit with the former World No.1 also dealing with issues in the crowd as he demanded a fan to be removed from Centre Court during his win on Thursday.
Djokovic was facing Fearnley and cruised into a two-set advantage. However a disturbance started the Fearnley revival. He dropped the third set and the Brit could be seen looking behind him into the stand. Security were supposedly talking to two individuals and he said: "It's him, that guy. Get him."
"That guy there, the grey tracksuit just going down the stairs now," he quipped.
But it continued as Djokovic asked why he wasn't out yet talking to the umpire. John Lloyd wondered what was going on. "I wondered if it was someone maybe talking too much, I don’t know what it was there."
But in the end it mattered not as Djokovic bounced back to win the fourth set and claim the win 7-5 and secure his spot in the third round. He defeated a player who was very much unknown. He only finished his university studies in May.
Fast forward two months and he is into one of the biggest matches of his life and Djokovic was very much relieved that it didn't go the distance. Next up for the seven-time champion is Alexei Popyrin with a likely latter stage tie with Holger Rune awaiting him.
"All in all this match potentially deserved to go into a fifth, particularly with the way he played in the fourth," Djokovic, said afterwards with a varying degree of relief. "But I'm very glad it didn't."
"I hadn't had a chance to see him play until two days ago, there is always an element of surprise and nothing for him to lose."
