Serbia will replace Russia in the
Davis Cup and Australia will replace them in the
Billie Jean King Cup, governing body the International Tennis Federation (ITF) has confirmed.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has widespread consequences in many spheres of the world sports included. Due to the invasion, Russia has been banned from all team competitions in tennis including the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup. The nation won both events last year which means they would have been the defending champions in both competitions.
Besides Russia, Belarus was also banned from team competitions due to their support for the invasion. Their replacements have now been announced and it will be Serbia for the Davis Cup and Australia in the Billie Jean King Cup. They are the highest-ranked nations among the 2021 losing semi-finalists hence why they were chosen.
