Alexander Bublik is officially an ATP champion after defeating
Alexander Zverev in the Montpellier final 6-4 6-3.
The player from Kazakhstan finally lifted his maiden trophy and he did in stellar fashion by defeating one of the best tennis players in the world in Alexander Zverev. The German played a brilliant event so this result is somewhat of a shocker for him as he was clearly the favourite heading into the match. Bublik played a great event as well but his level has been below that of Zverev all week.
Today it did not matter much as Bublik was able to find all the answers to everything that Zverev did. They actually played last year in Rotterdam and Bublik won that match in straight sets as well. There might be a matchup problem for Zverev against Bublik as today he did not have what it took to win.
It was an interesting match from the start as Bublik was the better player. He took the first break but Zverev pulled it back right away. Eventually, Bublik was able to win the set with 6-4. Zverev served better than Bublik but in rallies, the Kazakhstani player was simply better. He was hitting winners and forcing Zverev into making mistakes.
More or less a similar thing happened in the 2n set as well. This time around Zverev served even better but so did Bublik. He was impeccable on his own serve dropping only one point while attacking Zverev on his 2nd (won 5/7 of those points.) All in all, it was enough for the upset win and his first maiden trophy. Congratulations!
