Arthur Fils
defeated Juan Pablo Varillas 6-0, 6-2 and advanced to the semifinals of the
European Open, where he will face Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The
19-year-old French player achieved an impressive victory over the Peruvian
tennis player. As the fourth seed, he had a first-round bye and won his opening
match against Estonian Mark Lajal with a score of 7-6, 7-6.
His
opponent this time was the Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas, who had previously
defeated Fabian Marozsan and Aleksandr Shevchenko. The first set was completely
dominated by Fils, who needed only 27 minutes to secure a lead with three
consecutive breaks.
Although
the South American sought to pressure his opponent's serve and engaged in
several exchanges, the fast-paced game of the world No. 38 proved superior,
demonstrating authority in crucial points.
While in
the second set Varillas began to find success with his serve and took the first
game without dropping a point, Fils maintained his high level throughout. A
break in the fourth game was enough for Fils to maintain his advantage without
offering any break opportunities to his opponent.
The final
score favored Fils at 6-0, 6-3 in just 59 minutes, securing his spot in the
European Open semifinals.
In his
quest for the final, Fils will face a tough opponent in world No. 7 Stefanos
Tsitsipas, who has recently rediscovered his form and, as the first seed, seeks
to capitalize on his favoritism this week.
