Aslan Karatsev broke out at the 2021 Australian Open where he reached the semifinals all the way from the qualifiers ultimately losing to Novak Djokovic.
The Russian made a tremendous leap over the Australian Summer securing himself a grand slam debut at the Australian Open after some brilliant qualifiers. After making his debut at the Australian Open he continued to play amazing tennis taking down some big names. The ultra-fast courts worked extremely well in his favor and he defeated Schwartzman, Auger-Aliassime, and Dimitrov en route to the semifinals.
He did several things for the first time at that event and his ranking blew up from 114 to 42. His stellar play continued in the following months. He won the doubles title with Rublev in Doha before winning the ATP 500 title in Dubai which was his first singles trophy. He reached the Belgrade final but lost to Berrettini. At the Olympics, he won the silver medal with Vesnina losing out to Rublev and Pavlyuchenkova.
His form cooled off towards the end of the year but it was still enough to propel him to a career-high ranking of 15. His current ranking is 18th which is obviously the best he has ever had. All of those achievements made him a candidate to win the ATP Most Improved Player of the Year Award and he ultimately won it. Congratulations.
