Days after winning Stuttgart
Matteo Berrettini Began his title defence at Queen's with a solid win in straight sets over
Dan Evans 6-3 6-3.
The first set was a rather straightforward set of tennis with the typical schedule in Berretini matches. He was spectacular on his own serve allowing very little. Evans tried and really tried but it was pretty impossible to find any kind of breakthrough. Even when Evans found a break point there was no chance to pull back the serve.
On return Berrettini did just enough to get the one break he needed and win the opening set with 6-3. The forehand was not the sharpest today but it did enough when it mattered the most. The volleys worked as well when they were used.
Evans had much more success against Berrettini in the 2nd set because the serve dropped off a little bit, especially towards the end of the set. On the 2nd serve Evans created a lot of pressure and for the most part, he was able to win those points. In the end, it was just not enough from Evans.
A very solid performance overall 6-3 6-3 behind over 20 aces and over 80 % winning percentage after hitting the first serve. He hit it over 70 % of the time and that was more than enough.
