Casper Ruud avoided complications against tricky
Richard Gasquet in Paris beating him in straight sets 6-1 7-6(7).
The Norwegian player did not play much leading up to this event as he was beaten in round one of the Swiss Indoors by Stan Wawrinka. He bounced back in spectacular fashion taking apart the tennis of Gasquet in the opening set 6-1.
Ruud was very aggressive not allowing his opponent to find any kind of rhythm as he attacked early and often. He blasted 11 winners in the opening set as he cruised to an easy win. The second set was much more competitive as we saw a tiebreak.
Gasquet had a huge chance to send the match into a 3rd set as he squandered some early break points. He would break Ruud a bit later in the match taking a 5-3 lead and setting himself up to serve for the second set. He failed and Ruud broke back making it 5-5.
They settled it in the tiebreak where Gasquet squandered some more chances. He was up 4-1 early but eventually lost the lead as Ruud used his second match point to win the tiebreak 9-7. Too many mistakes in crucial moments for Gasquet.
