Marin Cilic kicked off his clay season with a solid win over Bublik in round one but his round 2 performance against Goffin was truly magnificent.
Marin Cilic continued his
Rome run with a crushing victory over
David Goffin where he completely dominated for the majority of the match. The start of the match set the tone for the rest of the match as the Croatian won the first three games of the match only dropping 3 points in that opening. From there it was a cruising victory. First, he continued his solid play ending the set with another break to make it 6-2. He only lost 4 points on his own serve, especially clinical on his 1st serve winning 91 % of those points.
The 2nd set opening similar to the 1st as Cilic won the 1st three games once more with Goffin offering a bit more resistance. It didn't matter much as the Croatian continued to pile on the early advantage being very dominant on his own serve. Very quickly he found himself with a 5-2 lead. Just like in the 1st set Cilic ended it with another break and it was 6-2 6-2.
A crushing defeat for Goffin who looked impressive in America but his form didn't translate to clay.
