In an All-American battle between two friends, it was Maxime Cressy who prevailed over Jack Sock n their second round encounter at the Citi Open Washington on Wednesday.
Cressy rallied from a set down to score a 4-6 6-4 6-0 victory over his compatriot, who seemed to run out of steam in the final set. Sock did not face a break point in the opening set, relying on his consistent serve placement and big forehand to dictate play and take advantage of his sole break point. This was sufficient for the former World No.8 to win the first set.
The second set saw both men bothered by double faults, with Sock hitting four while Cressy had five of his own. However, the 13th seed relied on a more consistent second serve, saving all four break points faced. Conversely, Sock was unable to do much with his second serve, as he won six of sixteen of those points, leading to him being broken at the third time of asking.
The decider saw Sock run out of gas, as the doubles Grand Slam champion was unable to keep up with his opponent. Cressy won 9 out of 10 points behind his first serve, and applied enough pressure to break Sock on three occasions, as he bageled his opponent to close out the match after two hours of intense play.
