Daniil Medvedev was the better player for a good amount in this match yet he complicated things a couple of times barely escaping in two sets 6-4 7-6(6).
The first set opened with Medvedev taking an early 2-0 lead as Auger had a slow start. They played last week in Rotterdam and Medvedev won that match in two sets. He was strong to start this one but then he gave Auger a chance to come back and he took it. From 4-2, we were tied at 4-4 but as it so often happens with Medvedev, he still won the first set 6-4.
The Canadian was the more aggressive player, he dictated the tempo in most rallies but he also had far too many mistakes in the end. 10 winners and 17 unforced errors compared to Medvedev's 7-6. The Russian played well in the second set as well taking a 3-1 lead but he gave it back not long after that to make it 3-3.
From there it was a competitive match with neither side getting any advantage. We arrived at the tiebreak and it was Auger who played a bit better taking a couple of mini-breaks. He was up 6-4 with set points but failed to convert either of the three he had. Medvedev did convert his first match point.
