Following some controversial decisions during the 2019 event, the annual Davis Cup Finals has undergone some reforms that will be introduced in 2022.
The International Tennis Federation partnered with Spanish footballer Gerard Pique's Kosmos organization in 2019, which led to various problems with that year's event. The home and away format was discarded, leading to an 18-team finals that was played over a week in Madrid's Caja Magica. This resulted in several matches extending late into the night, with some finishing as late as 4am.
Under the new amendments, the number of teams will be reduced from 18 to 16, with the possibility of adding two extra host cities for this year's finals, which will be held from November 25 to December 5 2021.
Additionally, the two other European cities would each host two groups and a quarter-final, with Madrid staging the remaining two groups, two quarter-finals, the semi-finals and final. This would likely lead to a greater spectator turnout, as attendance at the previous event was sparse in matches not involving Spain.
Kosmos has already launched an open bidding process and a decision will be taken in March.
