Competitive tennis is back after a short break but this match was everything but competitive as Shapovalov dismantled Fritz 6-3 6-0.
The first match of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship promised to be an exciting one but it did not live up to that expectation. Shapovalov led the H2H against Fritz convincingly before this match and once again it proved for good reason. Fritz struggled to outhit Shapovalov who stood far behind the line and sent a lot of balls back.
Fritz did not exhibit a lot of patience in his points many times going for very hard shots that rarely hit. The first set was somewhat competitive as Fritz was able to hang in there. Even after losing his serve, he applied pressure on Shapovalov but the Canadian was able to confirm the break after which he added another one to close out the set with 6-3.
The second set did not feature strong play by Fritz whose game completely eroded as the match went on. His frustrations were starting to show as well and Shapovalov was able to cruise rather easily in the 2nd set. IT was 2-0, then 4-0, and then 6-0. A strong match to start off his new campaign and his next opponent will be Andrey Rublev.
