Novak Djokovic is set to have his legal fees paid by the Australian taxpayer after being deported on Sunday.
Novak Djokovic has never been the most popular tennis player down under but his popularity certainly took a hit with the whole vaccine fiasco. The popularity might decrease even further because his legal bill will be paid by the Australian taxpayer despite his defeat in court.
The events, including the court cases, which led to Djokovic being deported cost a whopping amount of money. And, according to the Daily Mail, they are set to be paid by Tennis Australia – an organisation which is funded by the taxpayer Down Under. Tennis Australia is given huge sums of taxpayer money every year, with the funds said to ‘go back into the sport.’
But
the organisation apparently agreed to pay Djokovic’s legal bills as
part of an agreement to fight for him to stay and compete in Melbourne. Tennis Australia’s decision will likely annoy people who live in the
country, as many Australians were incensed that Djokovic was given
permission to play in the tournament in the first place. The news
comes after the organisation refused to provide legal help to Czech
player Renata Voracova, who was also deported after having her visa
cancelled.
