Toni Nadal joined
Felix Auger-Aliassime's team ahead of the 2022 clay season and the recently crowned ATP champion spoke on their relationships.
The addition to Felix's staff was the return of Toni Nadal to coaching and tennis and it came as a surprise to many. The news created waves in the tennis world but initially, it did not go too well. Auger-Aliassime played a very poor clay season losing multiple matches never achieving a deep run on the surface. Nadal remained in the staff and Auger was able to turn around the season as time went on.
Speaking about his coaching he touched upon Nadal and his regular coach Frederic Fontang:
“Both are really important for me. Frederic has been the rock for
the team. He is the leader and was able to build a great team around me
and he is a real professional. I think he deserves more credit than he
gets. He took me when I was 17 years old and has taken me to where I am
today and we are not done. It is a really special relationship we
have."
Turning his attention to Nadal, Auger said:
“I think we took Toni to
have that experience from the top of the sport and he built a lot of
confidence [for] the team and normality to winning tournaments like this
and reaching late stages at Grand Slams”.
