Christian Garin returned to tennis today to face Stan Wawrinka in the Erste Bank Open round 1 and he won against the Swiss player.
The final match of the 2nd day of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna ended with Christian Garin winning the match against Stan Wawrinka in just over two hours 6-4 6-7(9) 6-3. The start of the match was better for Garin who broke Wawrinka in his 2nd service game to take a 3-1 lead. From there it was a rather calm ride towards the end of the set. Wawrinka served well and played well with Garin not really forcing the issues. On the Chilean's serve there was a lack of good play from Stan so the Chilean had no issues. He could have ended it at 5-3 but Wawrinka saved the set point. The Swiss than had three consecutive break points to get back into the match but failed to use them and Christian sealed the set with 6-4.
The 2nd set proved an even less interesting affair as both players served well and played well. Wawrinka had two consecutive set points late in the set again but Garin saved them both. He then forced another one in the same game but once again he could not pull through. After that, we ended up in the tiebreak where Garin jumped out to a 3-0 lead but Stan fought back to win it 11-9. Wawrinka barely won the tiebreak having botched several set points before using one. Despite the set victory, Stan came out flat in the final one. Garin quickly broke him in the 2nd game and found himself up 3-0.
After that, it was a calm cruise towards the end of the match. Wawrinka was winning his own game mainly due to lack of interest from Garin to contest it and Garin was winning his service because he was playing good enough to that. Ultimately it ended at 6-3 for Garin.
