Medvedev is currently peaking in form and looking near impossible to beat in Cincinnati bulldozing his way into the semifinal. After capturing the title in Toronto Medvedev looks slated for another title run in Cincinnati after winning it in 2019.
After the match Medvedev said:
“That is why we like tennis because it is made of many, many different small details. Different conditions, different balls. I played much better today than I did there. I am really happy to win here and gain a small [bit of] revenge."
For Medvedev, the key was to be done with it quickly as the duo played during the hottest part of the day which is something Medvedev would have liked to avoid. Especially against a player who doesn't mind playing long rallies in Carreno:
“I was feeling great during the match. In these conditions, you try to win the match as fast as possible, especially against Carreno Busta, who can catch fire at any moment and start getting you into long rallies. I tried to keep pushing him and I am really happy I managed to do it.”
His opponent in the semifinal will be Andrey Rublev whom he knows very well having grown up with him on the courts. On that match he quickly said:
“[There is] lots of intensity when you play Andrey. He has been playing great since the restart of tennis, only ups, so it is going to be a great match. Of course, I want to be on top.”
