Former world number one
John McEnroe has stated that Andy
Murray working with
Novak Djokovic is the ‘craziest thing’ he has ever heard. Serbia’s legendary tennis star recently hired the former world number one as
his coach for the 2025 season.
The decision was a surprising one as not only was Murray Djokovic’s rival for the longest period of time, but he also retired from professional tennis after taking part in the Paris Olympics in the doubles category, where he and his partner Dan Evans were knocked out after losing in the quarterfinal.
Djokovic’s decision to change his coaching staff was based
on the fact that he had a rather below-par season according to his high standards
in 2024, where he failed to win a single Grand Slam title in seven years. Former
world number one McEnroe has been recently quoted in a report by Eurosport
where he talked about the coaching situation, including Britain’s greatest tennis
player coaching for arguably the greatest player in the history of men’s
tennis. McEnroe stated that it was the ‘craziest’ thing he had ever heard. The 65-year-old
also ended up presenting an interesting conspiracy theory.
"The coaching situation with
Andy Murray and Novak
Djokovic is fun, but it has got to be the craziest thing I’ve ever heard,"
said McEnroe. "I remember being in Australia when they told me that Murray
was going to be coached by Ivan Lendl, my great rival and nemesis from way back
when. I thought about it and said, ‘Oh my god, this is going to work!’. But
there [was] a big age gap. There’s a one-week age gap between Novak and Andy
and he just stopped playing. My theory is that Murray is going to coach
Djokovic for the next couple of months, and then he’s going to find out
everything he needs to know about how to beat Djokovic, and then he’s coming
back."
