Following his disappointing run at the 2025 ABN AMRO Open, it has been revealed that Danish star Holger Rune was under the weather during the ATP 500 tournament, according to his mother, Aneke Rune.

It seemed to be business as usual for the fifth seed as he defeated Italian Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets in their opening round encounter. However, Rune was unable to get past Spaniard Pedro Martinez in the second round.

Rune was battling an illness, says Aneke

The World No.12 was coming off representing Denmark at the Davis Cup qualifiers the past week. Aneke Rune, who helped coach her son during his early years on tour, spoke to the Danish media following Holger's early exit in Rotterdam.

"He caught the flu in Denmark after the Davis Cup, and he wasn't feeling well in the match against Sonego," said Aneke in an interview with Danish media outlet TV2. "He had a high fever and we had to consult a doctor. After that, he stayed in bed all day."

Rune himself admitted to having "a very bad night" before his match, possibly hinting at him not being completely over his illness. The former World No.4 has had a slow start to the season, losing in the first round at the Brisbane International before falling to eventual champion Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open.
