Carlos
Alcaraz expressed his lack of surprise regarding Jannik Sinner's victory over
Daniil Medvedev in the China Open final.
During the
China Open, the World No. 2 had impressive performances without dropping a set
until he faced an incredible Jannik Sinner in the semifinals. Sinner not only
defeated him but also outperformed the Spaniard, securing his spot in the final
with a 7-6(4), 6-1 victory.
In the
final, the Italian faced Daniil Medvedev, both of whom are among Alcaraz's top
competitors in the upper ranks of the ATP Ranking. Sinner's triumph showcased
his status as one of the toughest opponents for Alcaraz, as the Italian leads
the head-to-head (h2h) record 4-3. On the other hand, Alcaraz has a tied h2h
record of 2-2 with Medvedev.
In the
closely contested final of the tournament, Sinner and Medvedev were evenly
matched, but the young star gained an advantage by playing excellent tie-breaks
and ultimately clinched the title with a 7-6(2), 7-6(2) victory.
During his
press conference before his debut at the Shanghai Open, Alcaraz shared his
perspective on the final between his rivals and expressed that he wasn't
surprised by the high level of play they displayed
“I saw a
little, not all of it. It doesn't surprise me at all. I know Jannik's ability.
I know his level. He is one of the best players in the world & he can beat
anyone,” 2-times Grand Slam champion said.
“The final
does not surprise me. I know he lost six times in a row to Daniil, but
sometimes you can be better by studying your opponent's game & what he did
wrong in previous matches to be better & beat him. I'm very happy for him.
The level he was playing at was incredible," he added
Alcaraz is
the first seed this week in Shanghai due to Novak Djokovic's absence from the
Asian swing. He will make his debut on Saturday, October 7th, against Gregoire
Barrere.
