Former Australian tennis player
CoCo Vandeweghe made a
blunder on air, citing a fake quote from Russian tennis star
Daniil Medvedev.
The one-time Grand Slam winner suffered a defeat in the first round of the
French Open to Britain’s Cameron Norrie with a score of 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6, 7-5.
A parody page on the social media platform X—previously known
as Twitter—with the name of Tennis Centel, posted a fake quote of Medvedev. "Honestly,
man...I might skip the clay season next year. F*ck clay,” was the quote. Former
American tennis player Vandeweghe, who is working for TNT Sports during the
Roland Garros transmission, quoted a fake quote of Medvedev without realising
that he never said that. "Even said in that press conference, 'Maybe next
year I'll just skip the claycourt season.' So, he's chalking up this claycourt
swing as just maybe a trial and error," she said.
The defeat was a major setback for Medvedev as it was the
sixth time in nine outings at the Roland Garros that the Russian tennis star
suffered a defeat in the first round. Talking after the match, Medvedev admitted
that his form since the end of 2023 has not been the same and also admitted
that he has decided to change some things, which as of now, are not paying
dividends as he would have liked.
“Until 2023, I [had] never done it,” said Medvedev.
“Something started to change on Tour, I had to adapt. Now I'm never sure. I
played Karen [Khachanov in Doha]. During the match, I see that I'm not going to
win. So I changed my strings to completely different strings and I win the
match… Every tournament is so different. This one is so different from Rome and
Madrid. [The] clay, the balls, everything. I had one week here. I didn't find
anything that worked well. So during the match, I had to change something when
I was losing. It actually worked. Unfortunately I didn't win.”
