Daniil Medvedev won his first clay trophy and it's a big one, the Rome Open beating Holger Rune in two sets 7-5 7-5.
Daniil Medvedev has never loved clay courts going as far as calling them damaged. Even so, Medvedev understood that he should improve on them because the clay season is long and there are many great events to be won. One of those, the Rome Open, will be added to his list of wins after he made considerable improvements in his game on clay courts.
Speaking after beating Rune, Medvedev admitted that he still only loves clay courts:
“I always want to believe in myself & always try my best. At the same time I didn’t believe much I could win a Masters on clay. I don’t think I love it. I love hard courts. My only love. But I definitely like clay much more now”
Time will tell whether he will continue to play as well on clay with Roland Garros a perfect chance to prove that.
