Former world number one
John McEnroe has stated that he
will be ‘surprised’ to see if Britain’s
Jack Draper doesn’t win multiple Grand
Slams in his career after seeing his impressive performances of late.
The 23-year-old, who is already regarded as one of the most
talented players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category,
cemented his spot in the third round of the ongoing
French Open after beating veteran
Gael Monfils in the round of 64 with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Former world number one McEnroe spoke to TNT Sports after
the match, where he praised the 2024 US Open semifinalist. The 66-year-old
stated that after reviewing Draper’s performances in recent years, he would be surprised if the London-born individual does not go on to win multiple major titles in
his career.
"I tell you one thing, he won a lot of fans tonight
with the way he played and the way he acted and the way he handled the whole
situation," said McEnroe. "It's one of those matches that you’re
proud to be a tennis player. You look back at these two guys digging that deep,
you're looking at a guy 38 years old that is still moving unbelievably well,
and you see Jack Draper maturing, playing better and better on the spot. I
mean, I'll be surprised if he doesn't win multiple majors. It is incredible how
much he's improving and how great a player he's become."
McEnroe also went on to highlight why he is making such a
bold prediction about a player who is still waiting to cement a spot in the
final of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. The seven-time Grand
Slam winner stated that Draper can do ‘everything’ on the court, which makes him
a lethal opponent for any player.
"He can do everything," said McEnroe. "He's
an excellent volleyer, the serve is huge. He took his shirt off and I was
immediately jealous. The guy is in unbelievable shape. I tell you, he's got a
lot of big things to look forward to.”
