Jannik
Sinner responded to
Carlos Alcaraz after the prediction about the world No. 1
in 2024.
Since the
rise of the Spanish player in the upper ranks of the rankings, there are few
players who can boast a positive head-to-head record against the current world
No. 2 (4-3 in favor of Sinner).
The Italian
has become one of those who has caused the most trouble for Carlos Alcaraz, and
at the end of this year, he has showcased his best tennis, currently holding
the world No. 4 position and just one victory away from claiming the title at
the ATP Finals. In this regard, Alcaraz recently commented in a press
conference that he believes
Jannik Sinner can reach the world No. 1 spot in
2024 and could also secure his first Grand Slam title.
Sinner
responded to Alcaraz's comments, acknowledging that he will strive to achieve
that goal. He also stated that he has a great relationship with the Spanish
player.
“It’s a
huge privilege that Carlos says this kind of thing… kind things to me. I think
we are good friends, & obviously, he recognizes, I guess, high-level
tennis, no? Most importantly, he has been No. 1 already,” he said.
He was
fighting until this tournament here with Novak for getting the end of the year
world No. 1. It’s just nice to be around these guys, who have been #1. And I
will obviously try my best. The preparation for next year is gonna be a key
moment for me. So hopefully, we can work a lot.”
During the
ATP Finals held in Turin, Sinner has showcased his best form with four
consecutive victories, earning him a spot in the final. In the semifinals, he
defeated Daniil Medvedev (6-3, 6-7(4), 6-1) and will face the 24-times Grand
Slam champion Novak Djokovic for the title. Djokovic, who dominated in the
semis against Alcaraz with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win, is aiming for his seventh
title in the Finals.
