Australian Channel 9 chose to show the match of Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis instead of Nadal v Shapovalov and the Australian was left surprised.
Speaking after the match Kyrgios was notified of the decision to show his match instead of that of Nadal and Shapovalov and he was genuinely surprised despite claiming that the run of the 'Super K's' has increased the ratings of the event as well as attendance.
He said:
"Nadal is hell of a player. That's unexpected, I wouldn't expect that. Shapo, Shapovalov and Nadal are two probably of the best players in the world right now. He's one of the most exciting younger guys as well."
Even so, Kyrgios recognized the appeal of him and Kokkinakis saying:
"But, I mean, I think the level of entertainment I think is different I think."
Kyrgios also admitted that giving the fans a show is something that motivates him more so than individual success:
"I just want to play and give the people of Australia and the Australian Open a show and genuinely try and grow the sport of tennis. That's why I'm playing. I know Thanasi is just enjoying it. This is the most fun we've ever had on the court."
