After Tennys Sandgren defeated Sam Querrey to level the score of the competition, two highest-ranked players came to the court to fight for another point. While John Isner could give his team the lead for the first time at the All-American Team Cup, Taylor Fritz could have pushed his team to the lead for the second time as Frances Tiafoe triumphed in the opener.
Although Isner is ranked only 3 places higher than Fritz, he is 13 years older than the young American star. And it was the experience that showed on the court in Atlanta. The tall-American showed his A-game on his serve and allowed his opponent to have only one breakpoint during the match.
After winning 12 out of the first 13 rallies of the match, Isner got a comfortable 3-0 lead over Fritz early on. The younger of the two was not able to hit back as his more experienced opponent triumphed 6-3 in the first set. In the second, the story was really similar. Isner converted the only breakpoint opportunity he got and won the set 6-4 to win the second point for Team Stripes.
