"It's very emotional for me" - Kyrgios after winning Citi Open Washington

Nick Kyrgios won the 2022 Washington event and it was his first trophy since the Washington trophy he won in 2019.

Kyrgios played a perfect week of tennis in the US capital not getting broken once during the long week. The Australian also added the doubles trophy a couple of hours later to complete the clean sweep and it was a very emotional week for him. He was not in a good place last year and he referenced that in his post-victory speech:

"It's just very emotional for me. To see where I was at last year to now, it's just an incredible transformation. I just came out with great energy. I knew that I had experience on my side today. I love this court, I've played so many good matches here, so I'm just really happy with myself."

Kyrgios never hid anything and he also referenced that he got helped by many people but ultimately it was him who did the work in order to turn things around:

"I've been in some really dark places. Just to be able to turn it around... There are so many people who have helped me get there, but myself, I've shown some serious strength to just continue and persevere and get through all those times and be able to still perform and win tournaments like this one."
