Top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime is out of the Hall of Fame Open in Newport as he was beaten by Jason Kubler 4-6 6-3 7-6(4).
Auger-Aliassime did not have the greatest of time on grass this year and his early Wimbledon exit surprised many. It seems things are still not going that well for him as he stumbled in his first match in Newport being beaten by potential comeback player of the year Jason Kubler. The Australian has been playing amazing tennis this year with some notable performances at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
The Wimbledon journey is particularly bothersome for him because he could have dramatically improved his ranking if points were there. But he's keeping at it with a quarterfinal in Newport. The match started yesterday and it featured Auger playing rather well. The Canadian did better in the tricky windy conditions thanks to his superb serving.
Only one 1st serve point dropped en route to the 6-4 finish. He actually had a lot of issues on his 2nd serve with Kubler being solid overall but he got broken once and that was the difference. The Aussie player stabilised rather well in the 2nd set once again doing wonders on the 2nd serve. He was simply better in crucial rallies saving all four break points and converting the only one he had for the 6-3 finish.
The final set was a close one but it got suspended at 6-5 for Auger. Upon return the day after (today) Kubler faced a break point which was a match point for Auger but he saved it. The tiebreak finished with Kubler outplaying Auger 7-4 to secure the huge win, the biggest of his career and first over a top 10 player.
