Another major upset happened today as Laslo Djere came back to win against Casper Ruud in Auckland beating him in three sets 3-6 6-3 7-6(3).
Casper Ruud didn't have an offseason this holiday season as he kept playing between the ATP Finals and the new season. It wasn't really competitive tennis but he kept himself in shape better than most players. That makes this loss quite surprising as he looked in control after the first set.
It was a 6-3 for him with some solid play overall. No break points allowed, pretty good on the return but things changed moving forward. Djere is not a great player on hard courts but he upped his level considerably with the serve being the crucial weapon. He served better than Ruud in the second set and played the crucial rallies better.
The final set was one where both played well. Neither Ruud nor Djere faced any issues except for a few ones at the start of the set. We ended up in a tiebreak and Djere completely stunned Ruud by jumping out to a 6-1 lead. He would finish it off with 7-3 sending Ruud on an early trip to Melbourne.
