Rising tennis star Learner Tien scored the biggest win of his career when he defeated World No.2 Alexander Zverev at the Mexico Open on Wednesday, etching his name in the history books in the process.

The young American played the best match of his life to shock Zverev in a 6-3 6-4 victory. Tien matched the German's power from the baseline, employing sharp angles and precision to fluster his higher-ranked opponents.

Tien compiling positive record against the top 5

This was the 19-year old's second victory against a member of the top 5 in the ATP rankings. Earlier at the Australian Open in January, Tien defeated World No.5 Daniil Medvedev in a five-set thriller.

By virtue of his win over Zverev, the California native becomes the youngest player to win his first two matches against members of the top 5. Retired compatriot Jimmy Connors was the first American to achieve this feat, although Connors was older than Tien at the time.

Tien also became the youngest American to defeat a top 3 opponent since Andy Roddick in 2001. The Next gen star faces Czech star Tomas Machac in the Acapulco quarterfinals on Thursday.
