Matteo Berrettini reached his first grand slam final at Wimbledon and the Italian has impressed many including Wimbledon winner Pat Cash.
The Australian tennis legend has spoken about Wimbledon and the Wimbledon final a lot and he believes Berrettini is like Andy Roddick but even better. Roddick himself played in an epic Wimbledon final against Roger Federer but ultimately lost just like Berrettini. Cash said:
“Clearly he’s got a fantastic grass-court game. He’s had success on the grass. A few years ago he won the Stuttgart grass-court tournament. I had reservations on his ability to play on grass without a very solid backhand, but his improvement over the last couple of years has been phenomenal.”
Asked about Berrettini potentially winning Wimbledon in the future cash responded positively. He highlighted Andy Roddick as someone who nearly done it with a similar game:
“We’ve seen Andy Roddick do the same thing with [a] big serve, big forehand. But, Berrettini I think is even another level. Probably as good a serve as Roddick, but the forehand’s even bigger. With that sort of game, and the ability to come to the net, volley, he moves really well.”
