Russia wins 2021 Davis Cup, Medvedev defeats Cilic
Russia has done it, they have won the 2021 Davis Cup after a convincing victory over Croatia in the finals. One of the favorites in the event was able to reach the final and prove that they are a lot better than Croatia by winning 2-0. In the first match, Rublev easily bested Gojo while in the 2nd Medvedev was able to play well enough to secure the win for his country.
In this match against Cilic Medvedev found himself playing against a player knowing he needs to win. That resulted in quite aggressive play by Cilic which took some time for Medvedev to adjust to. The Russian did not face any issues on his serve early but that was the case for Cilic as well. Both faced break points in consecutive service games at 3-3 but both saved them.
The first set was settled in the tiebreak where Medvedev found himself trailing 2-4 after lackluster play. Cilic served very well but missed one forehand badly and it was 4-4. The Russian pulled ahead with 6-5 having a set point but a great serve saved it. Medvedev squandered a set point on his serve with a double fault but still rallied to win it 9-7.
After that everything was a bit easier as the Russian slowly took over with Cilic losing confidence. He took a break midway through the set eventually closing it out with 6-2. A good win for Medvedev and Russia who won both team competitions this year.
