The quest for the World No.1 ranking resumed for
Daniil Medvedev on Wednesday, as he swept past Pablo Andujar to reach the quarterfinals at the Abierto Mexicano Acapulco.
Medvedev needs to lift the title in Acapulco to surpass
Novak Djokovic as the top player in the world, and the Russian looked determined in his 6-1 6-2 demolition of the Spanish veteran. Firing seven aces and saving the only break point faced, the US Open champion dominated his opponent from the baseline with his unique brand of attacking tennis.
The top seed is competing in his first tournament since finishing runner-up at the Australian Open, and seems determined to lift his first title of the season. He will face the winner between seventh seed Taylor Fritz and Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka in the quarterfinal.
