Matteo Berrettini has spoken out against social media abuse after he experienced a wave of it following his Firenze Open loss.
Berrettini found himself losing a 5-3 advantage in the final set against Roberto Carballes Baena in Florence and he faced plenty of abuse on social media following the loss. He touched upon the topic in a recent talk with Corriere dello Sport being surprised at some of the stuff written:
"I'm on social media, but not a lot. I read, sometimes I smile, sometimes I feel bad. More than anything else, the wickedness surprises me. I wonder how one can vent so much on someone."
Players have been speaking out about similar instances for a while now and it's simply a part of being a professional athlete. He further added:
"The lack of human sensitivity worries me, as if we were machines that only have to do that: if we fail we must be scrapped and if we win we must be put on a pedestal. In the end, I go to sleep anyway and the next day I'm calm, but I'm sorry that sometimes tennis is seen like this."
The Italian suffered a foot injury in Napoli and he's trying to make himself ready for Paris. He won't be in Turin as he didn't earn enough points.
