Nadal overcomes technical difficulties to defeat Shapovalov at Virtual Madrid Open

Rafael Nadal defeated Denis Shapovalov in his first match at the 2020 Virtual Madrid Open to earn the first point in Group 1.

In the third match of the Virtual Madrid Open, it was Rafael Nadal and who stepped onto a virtual court against Denis Shapovalov. The young Canadian spoke to his fans a day before the tournament when he showed that he is practicing against the 'virtual Rafa'. Diego Schwartzman was the first player to get a point in Group 2 and so Rafa and Denis wanted to do the same in Group 1.
At the beginning of the match, players experienced some technical difficulties as they couldn't connect. After a few minutes of struggles, they began the match and Shapovalov got an early 40-15 lead. However, players lost the connection and another period of trying to connect began.
After finally overcoming technical difficulties the match began with both Shapovalov and Nadal holding their service games. The players seemed to improve by every stroke as the scoreboard showed already 2-2. The match eventually reached the tie-break after both players added another hold of their service. The Spaniard showed his experience in the tie-break when he has won it 7-3 to earn the first point of Group 1.
