Nick Kyrgios and Frances Tiafoe reunite after five years for a blockbuster DC Open doubles comeback

Nick Kyrgios and Frances Tiafoe are set to bring back one of the most entertaining doubles partnerships on the ATP Tour, with the pair confirmed to compete together at the Mubadala Citi DC Open. The collaboration marks their first appearance as a doubles team in five years, reuniting two of the sport’s most charismatic personalities ahead of the Washington ATP 500 event.
The Australian and the American last shared the court in doubles at the same tournament in 2021, also in Washington. That week, Kyrgios and Tiafoe reached the second round after defeating Rohan Bopanna and Ivan Dodig before falling to the team of Jannik Sinner and Sebastian Korda.
The reunion comes naturally given the long-standing friendship between the two players. Both Kyrgios and Tiafoe have built reputations as some of the most entertaining figures in tennis, combining explosive shot-making with strong personalities that have helped them connect with fans around the world.
Their relationship has also extended away from competition, with Tiafoe previously appearing on Kyrgios’ podcast, Good Trouble With Nick Kyrgios, where they discussed their careers and experiences on tour.
Their doubles partnership will arrive with plenty of attention, although neither player has enjoyed a particularly consistent season in the format. Kyrgios has competed in four doubles events this year, collecting only two victories, while Tiafoe has played just one tournament, partnering compatriot Brandon Nakashima at Indian Wells before losing in the opening round.
A reunion five years after their last Washington run
The pair also share a recent singles connection in Washington. Kyrgios and Tiafoe have faced each other only once on the ATP Tour, with the meeting coming at the 2022 DC Open quarterfinals. Kyrgios survived a dramatic battle against the American, saving five match points before eventually winning the title that week.
That triumph remains one of the most memorable moments of Kyrgios’ career, as it marked his seventh ATP singles title and his last championship at tour level. The Australian defeated Yoshihito Nishioka in the final after a strong run that also included victories over Tiafoe and other top opponents.
Kyrgios enters Washington after a recent appearance at UTS Rio, where he reached the semifinals after defeating Brazilian teenager João Fonseca before earning $123,000 in prize money from the exhibition event. The Australian later withdrew from Mallorca due to lower back issues but returned during the grass season, winning the Halle doubles title with Taylor Fritz.
For Tiafoe, the DC Open will also represent another opportunity to compete in front of home fans while managing both singles and doubles commitments. Unlike Kyrgios, the American has focused primarily on singles this season, making the doubles reunion more of a special attraction than a regular partnership.
