Nick Kyrgios faced many issues in this matchup but he was able to overcome all of that beating Brandon Nakashima 4-6 6-4 7-6(2) 3-6 6-2.
Kyrgios entered this matchup as a huge favourite simply because he has been playing so well at Wimbledon this year. His opponent played plenty of grass tennis as well and you can see the results of that in this match. Kyrgios had shoulder issues, he was spotted trying to fix something in his shoulder a couple of time. He took a couple of MTO's but eventually, he just had to toughen it out and he did.
If Kyrgios was fully healthy this might have been a shorter match but Nakashima did his best to take advantage of the situation. And he did by taking the opening set 6-4. In the 2nd set, Kyrgios was able to find some solutions and take it 6-4. The 3rd one was a close one where both players played well and held their serve.
Eventually, in the tiebreak, it was Kyrgios who proved slightly better taking it 7-2. The 4th set was one where Kyrgios messed things up by playing a bit loose. It seemed like he took the set off to focus on the 5th and it made even more sense when he came back superbly in the final set. Nakashima won the 4th 6-3 but the American player was completely blasted from the court.
Kyrgios took an early break with a visibly better level of play and then he added another one to close out the final set with 6-2. A huge win for Kyrgios but remains to be seen in what state his shoulder is.
