KEEP CALM AND JARRY ON 😎 @NicoJarry defeats Dimitrov 7-6 6-1 to become the 2023 Geneva Open champion 🏆 @genevaopen #atpgva
Nicolas Jarry is lifting his 2nd trophy this year after capping off a sensational run in Geneva with a beatdown of Grigor Dimitrov in the final 7-6(2) 6-1.
Jarry lifted his first trophy of the year in Santiago earlier this year. It was a big moment for the Chilean considering how his career unfolded after he made a breakout as a young player. Winning a trophy in his hometown only added to that. Now he added a second one this year and it comes in Geneva following a very impressive run that included wins over defending champion Casper Ruud as well as this stunning performance over Dimitrov.
The first set was a competitive one. Both of them came into the final confident about their tennis and it showed. Jarry once again dominated on his serve dropping only a few points behind the first one. The second one was a bit different but he managed to overcome that and force a tiebreaker after throwing away an early lead.
He dominated that tiebreak taking it 7-2 and fro mthere it was a rather easy cruise.
Many expected a second set where we will see a lot of battling but Dimitrov completely fell apart after losing the first set. He was unable to overcome Jarry whose forehand was on fire and rather quickly he fell behind finding himself in a hole with a double-break deficit. He never recovered and Jarry proceeded to end the match 6-1 in the second set for his second trophy of the year.
It was a deserved win for the Chilean whose career went a bit astray after a good start ins his earlier years. He is now back with experience and a newfound confidence this year which is showing in the results. Not many players won two trophies this year though the next step will be to bring this level to other surfaces.
