It was not a great match by Zverev against his compatriot Altmaier but the German was able to keep it in three sets which was important for him. Zverev has a habit of starting slams slowly especially early where he is forced to burn a lot of energy overcoming holes he dug himself. Today was not a hole but it was a plan that went sideways, according to Zverev.
He said:
“Not much went to plan today to be honest except that I won. But that is how it is sometimes. It is the first round of a very long tournament and you are not always going to play your best tennis. It was a good match for me to get into the tournament and hopefully, the next round will be better.”
Zverev will need to do much better in the next round as he will face John Millman, a player who is capable of making your life miserable with his defensive prowess and ability to keep the ball in play.
