Djokovic Wimbledon 3
Just like last year, Novak Djokovic began his Wimbledon title defence with a 4-set win over an inspired opponent with Kwon putting up a good but not good enough effort 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4.
The similarities between this match and last year's first-round match for Djokovic are stark. Once again it was an inspired opponent who was able to win a set against the Serbian. It was also a match played under a closed roof due to the rain and it bothered Djokovic a bit. He slipped a couple of times but was largely able to control the match even with some issues.
He opened the match by trailing 1-3 against Kwon who was playing very well. After finally shaking off the slow start, Djokovic was able to take control of the first set by winning 5 games in a row for the 6-3 finish. He lost the 2nd set after some lacklustre play allowing Kwon to be the more aggressive one. Kwon was actually the player that got the first break points in all four sets but he was unable to take his chances.
After saving a break point midway through the 3rd set, Djokovic was able to wrestle control with increased aggression. He was hitting the ball much harder than usual because he needed to. The break point was saved with a superb 2nd set serve winner that was very bold. It signified a crucial shift in the match which won Djokovic the match.
The final set was a noether solid one. Kwon had early break points but after failing to use them, Djokovic used his to take the lead. From there the Serbian cruised to a 6-4 finish.
