Novak Djokovic debuted with a victory at Wimbledon, defeating Frenchman Alexandre Muller in four sets. The 24-time Grand Slam champion begins his SW19 campaign in good form, where he seeks his 8th title – which would allow him to equal Roger Federer's record.
The world No. 6 maintained great consistency on serve and ultimately leveraged his experience to emerge victorious. In the second round, he will face wildcard Dan Evans, who won an All-Brit clash against his compatriot Jay Clarke.
The Serb hit a total of 22 aces throughout the match and landed 70% of his first serves, winning 82% of those points. The first set was comfortable for "Nole," who secured two consecutive breaks and took a 6-1 lead. However, in the second, Muller found his rhythm on serve and pushed it to a tie-break, where the Frenchman took the set 7-6.
The Serb drew on his experience, and without conceding any break points during the first three sets, he relied on his serve, waiting for his opportunity. In the 5th game of the third set, Djokovic again found break opportunities and managed to take the lead, winning 5 consecutive games and comfortably securing the set 6-2.
The Serb seized the momentum of the match, and in the third game of the fourth set, he secured an early break that set him on the path to victory. After saving three break points against him in the set, Djokovic went on a good run of points – winning 10 of the last 11 points played, and securing the victory 6-1, 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-2.
Djokovic advances to the second round, where he will face Britain's Dan Evans – who won his first-round match against fellow Brit Jay Clarke. "Nole" reaches 98 victories at Wimbledon, having won four consecutive titles before falling in the two subsequent finals in 2023 and 2024, both against Carlos Alcaraz.
