Andrey Rublev ATP Finals 2020
It was a very close match between Rublev and Ymer but ultimately it was the world number 5 that won the match to give Russia the 1-0 lead.
For a place in the Davis Cup Finals semifinals, Russia will need to defeat Sweden in Madrid. The first match was a very entertaining one where Elias Ymer took Rublev to the distance making a lot of Russian fans quite nervous. The start of the match was played brilliantly played by Rublev who asserted himself as the better player early.
He served well, his forehand was working and Ymer did not have much to counter Rublev. All of that resulted in a very quick 6-2 first set for the Russian. The 2nd set was a proper battle between the two players that saw moments of great play by both. Ymer took a 2-0 lead with Rublev pulling it back to 2-2. The Russian then took a lead 5-3.
He served for the match at 5-4 but failed to win it only to go on and lose the set 5-7. A devastating result for Rublev who lost 4 games in a row since taking a 5-3 lead. In the 3rd set, Rublev played brilliantly once more. On his own serve has unplayable not allowing a single break point en route to the tiebreak. He forced 7 break points but failed to use either.
He was very frustrated about his inability to close out the match but he did not lose his composure and remained calm closing it out in the tiebreak. A very big and important win for Rublev who complicated matters quite a bit but prevailed when it mattered the most.
