American tennis star Taylor Fritz will be representing his country at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Currently ranked as the number 1 American player on the ATP Tour, Fritz will lose that mantle due to his involvement at the Olmypics.
After an initial struggle during the early part of his career, Fritz rose to become the top-ranked American player in 2021, finishing the year at World No.23. Over the next few years, he improved his gameplay, rising into the top 10 after winning the Indian Wells title in 2022.
The 26-year old has had a successful 2024 season, featuring a runner-up finish in Munich, a semifinal run in Madrid, and a quarterfinal run in Rome. Furthermore, he won his second title of the season in Eastbourne and was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon.
However, due to his involvement with the Olympics, Fritz will lose valuable ranking points. The World No.11 won the Atlanta Open title last year, a trophy he was unable to defend due to his Olympic obligations. Furthermore, he reached the semifinals at at the Citi Open, another event that is held at the same time as the Olympics.
Compatriot and World No.13 Tommy Paul will take over as the highest-ranked American. Although the 27-year old is also competing at the Olympics, he will drop fewer points than Fritz between now and the start of the Canadian Open.
