Denis Shapovalov completely botched his singles match against Struff losing it in three sets but emerged as the hero in the doubles to send Canada into the semi-final.
Canada arrived with a very strong team headlined by the super-talented duo of Shapovalov and Auger-Aliassime. Shapovalov took on Struff in the first set and it was a very odd match in some ways as the German proved a very tricky out in these conditions.
Shapovalov was his wonky self struggling mightily in the opening set but returned to form in the second to take it. The final set went to the tiebreak and Shapovalov once again stumbled losing a very crucial match. That match gave Germany their chance to advance as Otte proved no match against Auger-Aliassime.
The deciding doubles match saw Shapovalov take the court once more with Pospisil and they didn't start off that well. Experienced doubles players Krawietz and Puetz took the opening set comfortably 6-2 but the Canadians came back to take the second 6-3.
They served really well in that set and that followed them in the next set as they played incredible tennis. One early break was all they needed as they didn't face a single break point in the entire final set. S
