Stan Wawrinka returned to tennis today in Marbella taking on Swede Elias Ymer and the Swede proved better in a well-contested match 6-2 6-4.
After being away from the Tour for an entire year, Stan Wawrinka finally played a competitive match today. The Swiss player dealt with many injuries and had several surgeries just to be back on the court. It's was a delight for Stan who had a big smile upon entering the court and despite the loss, he will content with the way he played.
Ymer is a very good clay player and Wawrinka pressured him quite a bit in his first match since the injury. His fitness is a work in progress and it was obvious in several rallies which he looked to shorten. More rust was also visible and all of that was quite normal considering the circumstances. Ymer ran away with the first set thanks to Wawrinka struggling to settle in a nice rhythm.
Once he finally did he even took a break off of Ymer to start the 2nd set. He held that break for a good amount before the Swede finally level the score at 4-4. He then took a 5-4 lead and closed it out with 6-4. Overall a valuable 94 minutes on the court for Wawrinka who should only look better and better moving forward.
