Stan Wawrinka made a winning return to grass taking down
Frances Tiafoe 7-6(2) 6-7(8) 7-6(5) after almost three hours of play.
The Swiss ace returned to action at Queen's with a spectacular showdown against Frances Tiafoe. Whenever the American plays, you know it's going to be good and it certainly was. The opening set was played a bit better by Wawrinka even though he was the player that needed to save a break point. We went into the tiebreak and in it, it was the backhand that reigned supreme.
Wawrinka finished it off with 7-2 to take the opening set. The 2nd set was practically identical with both player having no issues in winning their service games. Wawrinka was the only player that faced a break point once again and once again he saved it. In the tiebreak, it was Tiafoe who was excellent saving a match point to force a decided 10-8.
The final set was another spectacular one. Tiafoe jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. He maintained that lead relatively easily until the moment he needed to finish off the match. He lost his serve at 5-4 and then squandered a 40-15 lead on Wawrinka's serve. We went into yet another tiebreak and it was Stan who proved better.
Stan the man gets the win and moves on in Queen's. What a performance.
