Jan-Lennard Stuff has already one big final this year and he'll try to make another final on Saturday in Stuttgart as he booked the semi-final after a win over Gasquet 6-4 7-5.
The German player returned to his best tennis this year and not only that. At times he played the best tennis he has ever played professionally making his way to the Madrid Open final. He lost to Alcaraz but it was a huge confidence booster for him as he became the German number one replacing Zverev who held it for years.
The German's start on grass has been impressive because his game suits it very well. A great serve, good volleys and a big size which allows him to cover a lot of ground on the net. He used some of those skills against Gasquet who was okay but couldn't really do much against a very motivated Struff. Both players were really good on their serve but Struff had a bit more juice as he hit 6 aces to go along with 11 winners.
6-4 was the score in that opening set and it was a close one with a few rallies deciding it. Struff saved the lone break point he faced while converting the one he had on Gasquet's serve and that was that.
The second set saw Gasquet be a bit more aggressive which he had to because his serve didn't work too well. He struggled with it giving Struff many looks but still only got broken once saving 3/4. The German was sensational on his own serve losing only two points total on serve in the second set. He didn't face a single break point and posted a 21 winner and 4 unforced error line. The final score of the match was 7-5 for Struff who moved on to the semi-final.
