French veteran tennis star
Gael Monfils has admitted that he
has no intention yet of retiring from the sport. There were reports earlier
that the 37-year-old would consider calling it a day from the sport after struggling
with consistency in the recent past.
However, Monfils was recently quoted in a report where he
admitted that his love for tennis is a big obstacle in taking retirement and
therefore, he is not considering any such option.
“The reality is I love the sport,” he said. “I really enjoy
being on a tennis court. It’s something I can’t deny and it’s just amazing to
be out there. I’ve had a couple of moments where I’ve had tough conversations
with Nicolas (Lamperin, his agent and also the Classic’s tournament director)
and Elina. But I’m happy with everything I’ve done.
“I’m happy in my life, I don’t need more, I just want to
enjoy this and I guess Nicolas and Elina have had good words to push me to go a
bit more. Inside, I don’t really want to stop, but of course, it is tougher to
travel and make the sacrifices.
“But I’ve still got this little fire and that helps me to
keep going. When I’m playing I’m quite OK, but I won’t lie, to recover it’s
tougher. I need to do different rehab. I have to work differently with my
fitness, but I try to make sure it’s just a number.”
